Beyond the well-known government routes through JPA and MARA, there is a substantial pool of private sector and GLC scholarships in Malaysia that are either exclusively for bumiputera students or strongly favour bumiputera applicants as part of their mandate. These represent a second, often less-crowded application track that many eligible students overlook. Petronas is the largest corporate scholarship provider in this space — its scholarship programme is primarily for bumiputera students in engineering and science fields, with overseas placements at UK universities and local placements at UTP (Universiti Teknologi Petronas). Tenaga Nasional, Telekom Malaysia, and Khazanah Nasional similarly run structured scholarship programmes with strong bumiputera preference baked into their selection criteria. Bank Bumiputra Commerce (now CIMB), RHB, and Bank Islam have historically offered merit-based scholarships for bumiputera students in finance and accounting. Several Yayasan foundations associated with government-linked companies — Yayasan Telekom Malaysia, Yayasan MAXIS — also run education awards. The key difference from government scholarships: corporate scholarships almost always come with a post-graduation employment expectation at the sponsor company. This is sometimes but not always a formal bond. MyScholar lists corporate scholarships with bond and employment obligation details where available.
