Architecture in Malaysia is a regulated profession with a structured three-part registration process through the Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM). To become a registered architect, you need to complete a LAM-recognised architecture degree (Part 1), followed by practical training and the Part 2 professional examination, and finally the Part 3 professional competency examination. This process typically takes seven to nine years from the start of your undergraduate degree to full registration. Universities offering accredited architecture programmes include UM, UTM, UiTM, Taylor's University, and UTAR. Entry into architecture programmes is competitive — a strong portfolio showing drawing and spatial thinking skills is often part of the application process for private universities. The Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) is the professional body that architects join for networking, continuing education, and industry representation. Architects in Malaysia work across residential, commercial, institutional, and infrastructure projects. Starting salaries for graduate architects at established firms run from RM 2,500–3,500. Registered architects with a strong portfolio and client base can earn RM 8,000–20,000 or more in senior or principal roles.
