Data science is one of Malaysia's fastest-growing career fields, driven by the government's National AI Roadmap, Malaysia Digital (formerly MSC Malaysia), and an increase in data-driven decision making across banking, retail, healthcare, and logistics. The most common degree paths are Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or dedicated Data Science and Analytics programmes now offered at UM, UPM, UTM, Sunway University, and APU. That said, Malaysia's data science hiring market is pragmatic — a strong portfolio of projects (Kaggle competitions, personal analyses on GitHub, internship outputs) often carries as much weight as the degree name itself. Core skills expected by Malaysian employers: Python or R for analysis, SQL for data manipulation, at least one ML framework (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch), and the ability to communicate findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders. Entry-level data analysts start at RM 3,000–4,500. Data scientists with two to three years of experience and a track record of production model deployments can earn RM 6,000–10,000. Senior roles at banks (Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank) or tech companies often exceed RM 12,000.
