Dentistry in Malaysia follows a path similar to medicine — a five-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree, followed by compulsory housemanship and registration with the Dental Registration Committee (DRC) under the Malaysian Dental Council. Public universities offering dentistry include UM (the oldest and most established), USM, UKM, and UITM. Private dental colleges like CUCMS and AIMST also offer accredited programmes. Entry is highly competitive — students typically need excellent SPM results in Biology and Chemistry, followed by a strong A-Level or Foundation in Science result. After the BDS and housemanship period (currently 18 months to two years), dentists register with the DRC and can choose to remain in government service or move to private practice. Government dental officers start at around RM 3,200–3,800 per month. Private dental practitioners earn considerably more — experienced private dentists, especially those with specialist qualifications in orthodontics, oral surgery, or prosthodontics, can earn well above RM 15,000 per month. Specialist training is done either locally through the Colleges of Dentistry Malaysia or abroad.
