Teaching in Malaysia's government school system involves two main entry routes. The first is through Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia (IPGM) — a teacher training college network under the Ministry of Education — which offers a four-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) programme. SPM leavers can apply directly, and selection is competitive. The second route is through a degree in education from public universities like UM, UPM, UKM, UUM, or UPSI (which specialises exclusively in teacher training). Private university education graduates can also apply for government school positions, though government placements are prioritised for public university graduates. Upon completing their qualification, teachers are placed by the Ministry of Education (KPM) into government schools nationwide — placement location is not always the applicant's first choice, and outstation postings to Sabah, Sarawak, or rural Peninsular Malaysia are common especially early in a career. Government teacher salaries start at DG41 grade, currently around RM 2,600–3,200 per month for new entrants, with increments tied to the public service grade progression. Teaching is one of the most JPA and MARA scholarship-supported careers due to national teacher shortage targets — MyScholar lists several scholarship options specifically for education degrees.
