Nursing in Malaysia can be entered through two qualification levels — a three-year Diploma in Nursing (offered at public nursing colleges under MOH and private institutions) or a four-year Bachelor of Nursing Science degree from universities like UPM, UM, UiTM, and several private universities. Both pathways lead to registration with the Malaysian Nursing Board (MNB), which is mandatory to practise as a Registered Nurse (RN). After registration, government nurses are posted to Ministry of Health hospitals, clinics, or health offices nationwide. Private hospital nurses are employed directly. New RNs in the government sector start at grade U29 or U32, earning around RM 1,800–2,400 per month — though pay has increased following recent civil service salary adjustments. Post-basic specialist training (ICU, oncology, midwifery, etc.) opens career advancement opportunities and pay increments. Degree-holding nurses are increasingly recruited into nursing education, clinical research, and management roles. There is a significant global demand for Malaysian nurses, particularly from hospitals in the UK, Australia, and the Middle East — though working abroad requires additional licensing in the destination country.
