Mechanical engineering is one of Malaysia's most versatile engineering disciplines, with graduates entering sectors as diverse as oil and gas (Petronas, Shell, Sapura), automotive (Proton, Perodua), aerospace (CTRM, Malaysia Airlines Engineering), semiconductor manufacturing (Penang), and building services. The path follows the same professional framework as civil engineering — a BEM-accredited four-year degree, followed by graduate engineer registration, supervised experience, and Professional Engineer (PE) assessment. UTM, UM, UPM, UNITEN, and Multimedia University are among the institutions offering accredited mechanical engineering programmes. Students enter via A-Level, Foundation in Engineering, or a diploma pathway (diploma holders can often enter Year 2). Mechanical engineers in Malaysia typically specialise during their careers — HVAC, rotating equipment, structural analysis, or product design are common tracks. The semiconductor and E&E (electrical and electronics) manufacturing sector in Penang and Selangor is a major employer of mechanical engineers, particularly in process and equipment engineering roles. Graduate salaries start at around RM 2,800–3,800. PE-certified engineers with specialisation earn RM 7,000–15,000.
