Counselling in Malaysia is a regulated profession under the Counsellors Act 1998, administered by Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (LKM). Only individuals registered with LKM are legally permitted to use the title Kaunselor Berdaftar (Registered Counsellor) and to practise counselling professionally. This makes the entry path relatively clearly defined: you need a recognised degree in counselling or a related field, followed by supervised practice hours and registration with LKM. Universities offering Bachelor of Counselling degrees include UiTM, UPM, UKM, UMS, and several private institutions. The degree typically involves theoretical coursework alongside supervised counselling practice in placement settings. One common point of confusion is the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist in the Malaysian context — counsellors focus on supporting clients through life challenges, relationship issues, grief, anxiety, and career concerns using counselling modalities; psychologists (particularly clinical psychologists) focus more on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions and have a separate regulatory pathway. Both are valuable but distinct. Career settings for Malaysian counsellors include secondary schools (the KPM school counsellor system employs the most counsellors in the country), private counselling centres, hospitals, corporate employee assistance programmes, and rehabilitation centres. School counsellors in the government system are civil servants on the education service pay scale, starting around RM 2,500–3,200. Private practice counsellors earn per-session fees that range from RM 80–250 per session in Malaysia. The mental health awareness movement in Malaysia has significantly expanded demand for counselling services, though supply of trained and registered counsellors remains limited.
