A diplomatic career in Malaysia goes through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) and is one of the most competitive entry points in the Malaysian civil service. There are two main routes. The first is the Foreign Service Officer (FSO) track — a dedicated diplomatic stream with postings to Malaysian embassies and high commissions abroad. FSO positions are recruited through SPA and require a strong degree (international relations, law, economics, political science, and languages are most relevant) and typically very strong results at the written examination and interview stages. Language proficiency — at minimum strong English and ideally proficiency in Arabic, Mandarin, French, or another language — is an advantage. The second route is through the PTD (Pegawai Tadbir dan Diplomatik) general administrative service, a large category within the Malaysian civil service that includes postings to Wisma Putra and therefore potential diplomatic assignments alongside non-diplomatic administrative postings across all ministries. The PTD route is marginally more accessible but does not guarantee a diplomatic posting. In practice, Malaysian diplomats spend their careers alternating between postings abroad (typically 2–3 year postings at embassies, high commissions, or permanent missions at the UN and ASEAN) and home postings at Wisma Putra HQ in Putrajaya. The work covers bilateral relations, trade facilitation, consular services for Malaysians abroad, and multilateral negotiations. Salary follows the government service scale — starting around RM 2,800–4,000 for officer grade, with overseas posting allowances that can significantly supplement income during international assignments.
