The Malaysian Armed Forces (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia, or ATM) comprises three services — Tentera Darat Malaysia (Army), Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia (Navy, TLDM), and Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia (Air Force, TUDM) — each with officer and enlisted ranks. Entry as a commissioned officer follows two main routes. The first and most structured is through Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur — Malaysia's dedicated defence university that produces the majority of military officers across all three services. Admission to UPNM follows SPM results, physical fitness assessment, and an aptitude evaluation; successful candidates complete a four-year degree programme integrated with officer cadet training. The second route is through direct officer cadet recruitment for graduates who already hold a degree — these are advertised periodically through SPA and the individual service recruitment portals. Specialist officers — medical, legal, engineering, chaplaincy — are recruited directly from relevant professionals. Physical requirements are strict: candidates must pass fitness tests involving running, push-ups, and sit-ups to ATM standards. Malaysian military officers enjoy comprehensive benefits including accommodation allowances, medical coverage, retirement pension after 20+ years of service, and various rank-based allowances. Officer starting pay in the lower commissioned ranks (Lieutenant/Leftenan) is approximately RM 2,800–4,000 per month; Colonels and above earn significantly more with allowances. Service life involves potential postings across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, and UN peacekeeping missions abroad.
