Social work in Malaysia is a profession that is growing in formal recognition but still underrepresented relative to the country's needs. Practising social workers in Malaysia work across child welfare, elderly care, disability services, domestic abuse support, addiction rehabilitation, and community development. The formal professional body is the Malaysian Institute of Social Work (MIMSW), which is working toward mandatory registration for all practising social workers — as of 2026 this is not yet fully enforced but is increasingly expected by government agencies and reputable NGOs. The main degree route is a Bachelor of Social Work from universities including UM, UiTM, UPM, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and several private institutions. The degree includes supervised fieldwork placements as a core component. Career tracks split between the government sector — primarily Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM), Malaysia's social welfare department, which employs the largest number of social workers in the country — and the NGO sector, which includes organisations like Shelter Home, Lighthouse Children's Home, and various community-based organisations. JKM social workers are civil servants on the government pay scale, starting around RM 2,200–2,800 per month. NGO sector salaries are often lower but the work may be more directly impactful in specific areas. The profession in Malaysia faces a real challenge: caseloads are frequently very high relative to staffing, and burnout is a documented issue. It is a career that requires genuine commitment to the mission beyond the financial reward.
