Veterinary medicine in Malaysia is a regulated profession under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1974, with registration managed by the Department of Veterinary Services Malaysia (DVS). Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is historically the primary veterinary school in Malaysia and remains the most established, though other institutions have since developed programmes. The degree is a five-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) — entry requires excellent SPM results in Biology and Chemistry, followed by a strong pre-university result in science. After graduation, new vets register with DVS and can choose from several career paths: government veterinary services (DVS itself — livestock disease control, food safety, border inspection), private small animal practice (companion animal clinics, of which there is a growing number in urban Malaysia), aquatic animal medicine (given Malaysia's significant fishery and aquaculture sector), wildlife medicine (Zoo Negara, Perhilitan, wildlife rehabilitation), and livestock/agri-business roles. Starting salaries for government veterinary officers are around RM 2,800–3,500. Experienced small animal practitioners at established private clinics can earn considerably more, and those who own their own clinic have uncapped income potential.
