Social science is a broad field that encompasses sociology, anthropology, political science, economics (in some classifications), psychology, communication, and social work — and the career landscape for graduates from these disciplines is wider than the 'what can you do with that degree' question implies. Malaysia's largest employer of social science graduates is the public sector: Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM, Department of Social Welfare) employs social workers (Pegawai Kebajikan Masyarakat, grade S41) who work in child protection, elderly care, disability services, and rehabilitation programmes. Entry to JKM requires a Bachelor of Social Work or related degree and typically starts at RM 2,400–3,500. The NGO sector is a smaller but meaningful employer — organisations like MERCY Malaysia, Suhakam, Women's Aid Organisation, PERTUBUHAN IKRAM Malaysia, and dozens of community-focused NGOs hire social workers, research officers, and advocacy staff, typically at RM 2,000–3,500. Policy research is another avenue: think tanks (ISIS Malaysia, IDEAS, REFSA) and government research units (EPU, MAMPU, PEMANDU) hire political science, economics, and sociology graduates for research, analysis, and policy development roles. The corporate sector recruits social science graduates primarily into HR (Human Resources) and Learning & Development roles, where sociology and psychology graduates are valued for understanding group behaviour, organisational dynamics, and employee welfare. Graduate salaries in social science fields reflect the sector — NGO and government roles typically RM 2,000–3,500; corporate HR or policy roles RM 3,000–5,000; research and consultancy RM 3,000–6,000 depending on experience. Graduate-level education (a Master's in Social Policy, Development Studies, or Applied Psychology) significantly improves career access and salary ceiling.
