Teaching is one of Malaysia's most significant public sector professions by headcount — the Ministry of Education (KPM) employs over 400,000 teachers across primary, secondary, and special education schools nationwide. The two primary entry routes into government service as a teacher are PISMP (Program Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perguruan) — a four-year teacher education programme at Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) campuses — and DPLI (Diploma Pendidikan Lepasan Ijazah), a one-year post-degree teaching diploma for graduates who hold a first degree in a relevant subject. KPM announces teacher intakes periodically — these are competitive, particularly for specialist subjects in Science, Mathematics, English, and Special Education. Government teachers enter on grade DG41 with a starting salary of approximately RM 2,400–3,200, with increments tied to the annual performance review and promotion through DG44, DG48, and ultimately to the DGA (administration) track for those in headmaster and education officer roles. Beyond government schools, Malaysia's private and international school sector is growing rapidly — international schools (IB, Cambridge A-Level, national plus curriculum) pay significantly more, with experienced teachers earning RM 5,000–12,000 depending on school tier and subject. Higher education is another pathway: lecturers at public universities (DH41 grade) are required to have at minimum a Master's degree, with PhD increasingly required for permanent positions. Education is among the fields where MyScholar lists specific scholarships — including KPM's Biasiswa Perguruan for teacher education students.
